How do I clean my child’s teeth?
Prior to the first baby tooth coming in, it is important to begin oral hygiene by wiping the gums with a 2×2 gauze wrapped around your finger. This helps to keep the mouth clean, as well as introduce the concept of oral hygiene to your child so it doesn’t become a foreign concept.
After the first tooth comes in, begin brushing with a soft, baby toothbrush twice a day without toothpaste until your child reaches two years of age.
Early exposure to fluoride in toothpaste can be toxic and lead to a condition called fluorosis, which causes permanent teeth to look unsightly.
After your child turns 2, begin using children’s fluoridated toothpaste when brushing morning and night, and be sure your child does not swallow the toothpaste.
Flossing should be introduced every night as soon as teeth begin to contact one another.
